WVU Basketball--March Madness--Salt & Pepper

It is great that WVU won their first game in March Madness
and will be good for another game on Saturday with
Kentucky. It sure was fun to see Dalton Pepper steal the
ball three times in a row to give that defensive thrust that gave
the Mountaineers the confidence to put the first game behind them.
He was able to score two times on the steals--Good job!
You go Mountaineers!

Morgantown High School Band/Los Angeles All City High School Band

As I said in my previous blog, my favorite band in the Rose Bowl
Parade is the Los Angeles All City High School Band. So I thought
why do I always think that even though there are some other
spectacular bands every year for us to see? I came up with--
this red, white, and blue marching band is always snappy, cool,
talented, right on key with all good musicians. And, it reminds me
of the Morgantown High School Band,

I have seen the Morgantown Band recently on U-Tube and it didn’t
disappoint me one bit. When I was a member, I had the elitist belief
that people came to the football game to see the band--not football.

I am now an avid football fan (watch every WVU game on ESPN and
ABC), but I love bands,too. Since I live in Los Angeles, it would
blow me away and also the other spectators if Morgantown High
School Band could come out here for the Rose Bowl Parade--
the Grandaddy of them all.

We Angelenos know that it is not too difficult to bring a lawn chair and coffee to the Rose Bowl Parade, sit on the sidewalk and enjoy the beautiful floats, outstanding marching bands, and gorgeous horses such as the team of eight St. Louis Budweiser Clydesdales, with the driver and two Dalmatians riding in the red, white, and gold beer wagon--a sight to behold.

These horses weigh between 1800 and 2300 pounds and stand 18 hands high. They arrive here by (you guessed it) three red flashy 50-foot semis and have a trainer at all times. Each night they sleep in local stables until the big day when they are transported to the parade in the early morning of January 1.

Kids are delighted with the parade, of course, but did you know that you can see the marching bands perform before the parade at the Pasadena City College Bandfest? This is usually a two-day event and will begin this year on December 29th.

Parents and grandparents, this is your chance to give a wonderful experience to your youngsters and perhaps get that child interested in becoming a marching band member, too. It is always nice to see and hear the bands perform at the parade, but it does not compare to their performance at the Pasadena City College. The bands are all very good, and my favorite is the Los Angeles All City Marching Band.

Santa's Sled: A Red Big Rig with All the Trimmngs

Instead of a sled, Santa should get himself one of those red, flashy big rigs with condo accommodations in the cab. He could bring Mrs. Claus and really enjoy the ride with electric seat warmers and two 64 ounce thermos mugs and there would be plenty of room for a couple of elves in the back, too.

I would suggest one of those bright red Coca Cola rigs. Even a UPS truck would do as long as it had one of those fancy grills like a Peterbilt, Mac, or a Freightliner. He would, of course, need lots of bells and whistles--I mean like fancy rows of lights on the cab and the trailer, and plenty of shiny chrome that would glisten in the glow of the lights.

He couldn’t park it on the roof, of course, but he could park it on the street and light up the neighborhood with his holiday gear, and he could store his ladder on the side of the truck with a few fancy hooks so if he still wanted to go down the chimney, he could.

Since he couldn’t fly through the air, he would have to go global, and hire some drivers in all parts of the world, and that sure would help the worldwide economy in a number of ways. The animal protection people should be OK with this, since Christmas Eve has always been hard on the reindeer anyway, poor Rudolph.

Traveling With The Kids During The Holidays

Election Day

patriotic duty and show up at the polls and vote.

Secretariat and the USA

Wow! What a movie! What a horse!

Yesterday Stan (my husband) and I saw the movie Secretariat. I couldn’t wait to see the movie, and It occurred to me that the USA is a lot like Secretariat. Now I know it is rather odd to compare a country to a horse--but it works, and here’s how.

In 1776, right off the dime (thanks to our forefathers) we stood above the rest. After all, we had a strong constitution and we were track smart, knowing how to navigate those pesky turns and cagey jockeys, and royal know-it-alls. Yes, we kept on moving out of the starting gate, knowing that with a little maneuvering, and conserving our reserve we were going to be in the winner’s circle again and again-- a triple crown champion, envied by the world, instead of being ruled by the crown.

Like Secretariat, the USA is still moving in greatness, so let’s keep it that way and as citizens of our wonderful county vote our hearts and minds on November 2. Remember, throughout our land many races will be wire-to-wire and we would rather win by a nose than finish second.

Traveling on the I-5

A couple of weeks ago Stan (my husband) and I were on Interstate 5 on the section from Los Angeles to just south of Sacramento on the way to San Francisco. To say that this is a boring drive is an understatement.

Do you remember all the lush greenery of the crops that were growing there for all the grocery produce markets in the US and beyond? These fields are brown and desolate now, unfortunately, due to lack of water.

I don’t know about you, but Stan & I love Central California and enjoy the restaurants there. Their veggies and meat dishes are just a little bit tastier than elsewhere because these food products are grown in Central California and the big rigs get them to the chefs without delay. Let’s hope that the water starts to flow again and these farms located near the I-5 are back in business soon.

We play WannaBtruckers Board Game while away the time on the b-o-r-i-n-g parts of the I-5 (not all parts are boring, of course). The long haulers with all their bells and whistles with the stripes, flames, logos, contrasting colors whiz by. If I’m driving, Stan can move my pawn, and vice versa when he drives.

Marc, one of our grandsons, learned to count with this game, and we play it on the freeways in Los Angeles, too. It keeps him interested, when he is not playing one of his electronic games. We like it because we all can play it together--it is a family game.

When and if you are on an interstate with a lot of big rigs, you might be a little
frustrated with their bigness and the fact that they might outnumber the
autos on the road.

If you know how to play “WannaBtruckers” you learn to love the big rigs
and it makes your trip a lot less frustrating.

At the end of June 2010 we drove on Interstate 40 and stopped in at the well-known
truck stop Speedy’s where they sell Navajo products. It is very attractive and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful buttes in the world. I am happy that WannaBtruckers board game is being sold at Speedy’s.

WannaBtruckers was made in the good old USA. I created it in Los Angeles; it was published in Battle Creek, Michigan; and its recyclable parts were tested in Marietta, GA.

Did you know that because of the price of diesel fuel and the 300 gallon sized fuel tanks, it can cost a trucker $1500 just to fill up the tank?

Also, the trailers pulled by the big rigs have many different styles and shapes--vans, flatbeds, and tankers.

Board games calm the nerves because it requires concentration and this game also
relieves boredom while you are driving many miles on the interstates. Since it is
live action (no batteries required) and two people play per board, it can be a shared
experience.

We are so proud of the West Virginia University Mountaineers. What a great season!!

When you are on an interstate and see a long-hauler, do you wonder where did this big-rig come from--what port of entry or big manufacturing company is sending this shipment? What section of the US is sending its goods to another site so that a store could sell these items to the customer? Our country is dependent on these drivers and their 18-wheelers.

In traveling on various interstates, the long-hauler trucks always got my attention. Besides doing an important job, these drivers and their trucks seemed to demonstrate a state of adventure.

For the most part, their colors and design reflected a sense of pride in personal ownership. Whether a big company or a single ownership, the pride of their rigs are always there. It came to me that this should all be appreciated by us who drive on the interstates with the big rigs. These truckers are to be respected for what they do.

My three-year old grandson at the time thought counting trucks was a lot of fun, so this game came about in various stages. The game board is both colorful and educational, so I would like you to give the game a whirl and let me know how you like it.
